Can HVAC filters kill the Coronavirus?

Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus, we have been receiving daily calls asking about the types of air filters to use and if an air purifier would remove the virus from their homes. The answer to those questions is no, neither the filters nor the air purifiers will kill the virus. Please beware of those who claim they have a product that will work against the virus.

However, purchasing a higher quality AC filter or installing an air purifier will help to improve the overall air quality at your house. A 1-inch filter will clog up with particles much faster than a 4- or 5-inch filter. For the most effective air filtration, use a HEPA filter. These High Efficiency Particulate Air filters capture airborne particles as small as .3 micrometers. While they are the most expensive on the market, they will last longer and keep the air cleaner in your home.

Can Air Purifiers kill or reduce the Coronaviruses?

While air purifiers are a great solution for those who suffer from allergies and asthma, they are not the solution for viruses. Air purifiers frequently use HEPA filters, which are known to capture 99% of pollutants such as molds, pollen, and pet dander. The Coronavirus is so microscopic that they are able to work their way through air purifiers.

Testing is underway!

As a result of the virus, AC manufacturers have started testing their products with a focus on HEPA filters and how they work in filtering COVID-19. As we know, scientists still do not know the exact length of time that the virus can live on different surfaces. Do keep in mind that filters may be able to trap the virus but it does not kill it. The virus could potentially live on a HEPA filter for up to 9 days. Be sure when changing your filter to wash your hands thoroughly after and dispose of it outside of your house in a trash bin.
